Breathe in some science

Breathe in some science

I stumbled onto the Compound Chemistry website via Lorna Salgado’s post about MSG. https://plus.google.com/u/0/+LornaSalgado/posts/LheN6YymAns

In the infographic below, they bust the myth about chloroform being used for nefarious activity. Chloroform takes about 5 minutes to have an effect. That’s not what’s portrayed in the movies.

Maybe Compound Chemistry will inspire posts by our resident chemist, Siromi Samarasinghe.

Thanks Bobbi Jo Woods. I had a grumbling dog at my side, wanting to go for her walk.

And something that everyone should be aware of…. Petroleum ether is NOT the same as diethyl ether.  For one, you can actually drink diethyl ether as though it were alcohol and they used to do exactly that waaay back in the day.

Reverend Eric Ha, I didn’t know people confuse the two.

Chad Haney omg yeah, BADLY, even if they’re chemistry majors sometimes. I can look and find a million how-to’s that are for the most part well-based in chemistry and then I see them confuse diethyl with petroleum and I just shake my damn head..

Thanks for tagging me Chad Haney ! We have used chloroform in the lab as a reagent and a solvent over the years, and we haven’t had any casualties! Safety procedures are followed strictly now.

Siromi Samarasinghe, I really enjoyed your post about mustard gas and found that Compound Interest has a related infographic.

Chad Haney, thank you for your interest and for the link. I am following Compound Interest but missed this one!

Yes, I must start writing some chemistry posts. Haven’t been active on G+ since I returned from the UK!
