Rajini Rao post about clean water from lime, salt, and sunlight (http://goo.gl/SctrB) reminded me of Ali Adelstein post about clean water (http://goo.gl/KLbez).
It also reminded me of this story about a year ago of a guy who figured out that a bottle of water inserted in the roof is the equivalent of a 60-watt bulb.

Yes! I was thinking of the water-light bottle too!

I remember that guy! I think it was on 60 Minutes. Very cool stuff. Such a simple idea, it makes you wonder why you didn’t think of it yourself.

FWIW, I never think about making holes in the roof. I do have a 100+ year old ship’s deck prism converted to a night light. I occasionally walk past a block of glass set in the sidewalk pavement as a light source for commercial building storage areas. Who would have guessed it is the equivalent of a 60w bulb?

They are using this in poor places in Brazil with amazing results. Simple idea, great effect.
