Predatory Conference?

Predatory Conference?

I’m used to getting invitations to publish in predatory journals but is there such a thing as predatory conferences? I’ve never heard of this conference. Most of my publications involve MRI not nuclear medicine. I haven’t publishes anything using radiation therapy in ages. Hence, the suspicion that this is a predatory conference.

Filippo Salustri, have you experienced this?

Yep. Hubs has seen that. Different industry, same stuff. They’re hedging bets that you have an admin taking care of your calendar and doesn’t know any better. If you’re on top of your own stuff, it’s not an issue because you know it’s a scam.

Yes, I get several invitations to conferences every year that are obviously predatory. It’s a thing. They’re invariably ‘WAY outside my field but in beautiful locations. The emails are also usually very poorly written and formatted.

Filippo Salustri I guess I’ve been ignoring the ones that are essentially way outside my field. This is the first that’s mostly on target.

I had one be very insistent that I submit an abstract for a presentation. At first I thought I was being asked to be a paid keynote speaker, but no, it was a predatory conference on cell biology just trying to get paid attendees. Now I look up the conferences before “accepting” an invitation.

Joanne Manaster today’s request was a follow up. “Maybe I missed their first invitation”.

Chad Haney Hah. It’s the same form as many spam emails I get: “Hi; I guess you missed my last message about the $3b prize you won….”

Sometimes, before I mark as spam and report it, I reply to the Conference Organizers and tell them in excruciatingly detailed information exactly what they should do with their conference. I’m sure it makes not one whit of difference, but it sure does feel good. 🙂
