Need to relocate some wolves

Need to relocate some wolves

With a moose population around 1,200, we need to relocate some wolves to Isle Royale National Park. As the article mentions, too many herbivores without a top predator is not sustainable. Climate change has reduced the number and frequency of ice bridges. That limits the introduction of new wolves to the gene pool. So inbreeding has limited the ability of wolves to maintain their population on the island. #ThanksClimateChange

Were wolves introduced into Yellowstone Park, Chad Haney ? I’m wondering what became of them..they were very unpopular with local farmers I think.

Rajini Rao, it seems that there are court battle back and forth regarding the repopulation program in Yellowstone. http://www.nps.gov/yell/learn/nature/wolfrest.htm

Since it involves Idaho, maybe Gnotic Pasta  has some insight.

Thanks for the insight Gnotic Pasta. You are welcome to move your surplus wolves to MI. Have fun with your Adrian’s project.

Gnotic Pasta’s explanation is succinct and accurate enough to apply to wolf reintroduction in Yellowstone in Montana (where part of the park is; the bulk is in Wyoming). I live in a different part of the state, but can attest that bumper stickers portraying a crossed out howling wolf and the slogan “Smoke a pack a day” (re hunting wolves) is common.

Yes. It’s the attitudes that bug me personally, reflective of a divided culture, but most hunting here is responsible. Most. anyway, the comment was just in answer to the question about Yellowstone, which you’ve thoroughly answered. There have been other ecological benefits there, too, like streambed and riverbank health increasing with slightly lower elk populations.

I think the Isle Royale National Park case is more appropriate since it’s an island. You don’t have to worry so much about livestock and humans.

They say there’s 1200 moose there. I think that needs more wolves. I saw a mountain lion while camping in northern cal once. We selpt down by the creek. When we woke up in the morning. It was looking at us from above, across the creek. It was scary and exhilarating at the same time. I was probably 15.
