Moore Nuclear Energy
Joanne Manaster posted this re-share from Jim Carver. The post was of a video from The Guardian about a video entitled How to build a nuclear power plant. The video is 13 min. long but it is informative. I would link directly to Jim’s post with a hat tip but it appears that he’s blocked me. Maybe he’s a Colorado Avalanche fan. http://goo.gl/0yteQ
Anyway, the post reminded me that I had promised some of my G+ pals that I would post pictures of Henry Moore’s Nuclear Energy sculpture, which marks the location of the first self-sustaining nuclear chain reaction. It was accomplished on 2 December 1942 under the supervision of Enrico Fermi along with Leó Szilárd, discoverer of the chain reaction. You can read more in the Wiki: http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Chicago_Pile-1
The site is next to the new Mansueto Library at the University of Chicago, which you can see in my profile scrapbook. The site is both a National Historic Landmark and a Chicago Landmark. You can read more about Henry Moore’s sculpture here: http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Nuclear_Energy_(sculpture)
The site for the new nuclear plant, in the video, is in Finland. I couldn’t think of a Finnish singer so I came up with Lykke Li who is Swedish. Geographically that’s close enough. I know in hockey, there’s a big difference.
I leave you with Lykke Li- I know places
Edit so as not to offend anyone from Finland, I found a Finnish band in my music collection.

Interested in LFTR, here are a couple of posts.
Tommy Leung mentioned today, on his #ScienceSunday post, if science and art can go together. Of course they can. Science is beautiful. Science is everywhere just tag ScienceSunday curated by Allison Sekuler Rajini Rao Robby Bowles and me (with guest curator Buddhini Samarasinghe ) For the rest of the week tag #ScienceEveryday and mention one of us. Circle ScienceSunday so that it is easier to mention you back and interact with you in general.

Because they don’t have a landmark yet. 🙂 I saw your link to a few of the TED talks about LFTR. It’s very interesting but not really my area of expertise.

Wow, sorry to offend you J Elliott-Smith. You made some false assumptions. I’m not suggesting that a Swedish singer/person could represent Finland. As I stated they are unequivocally geographically close. I don’t have any Finnish artists in my music collection. You could have suggested one rather than assume I thought that my choice was representative of Finland. The more correct analogy would be, I don’t have any Mexican artists in my music collection and since it’s not a big part of my post, I’m not going to spend all day trying find one I like. The post reminds me of a artist from Texas, which is geographically similar, so I will post that because it was the first thing that came to my mind. I’m happy to apologize in the hypothetical post as well if it offends anyone who assumes I’m being ignorant about the difference between Texas and Mexico.
If I had any Finnish G+ friends like Jaana Nyström I still wouldn’t have asked for any music suggestions because it wasn’t the point of the post. I do have two Norwegian G+ friends Lars Ivar Igesund and Knut Torgersen Maybe they can suggest a Finnish song, unless it offends them that I would assume Norwegians would know a good Finnish song.

Chad Haney Heh, I’m not very into Finnish music, and certainly can’t come up with a specific song without googling, but I know of Jean Sibelius (composer) and Arja Saijonmaa (singer), and I believe I have an album from 22 Pistepirkko (rock band), and I’ve also seen them in concert.
Oh, and we can never forget Leningrad Cowboys! Awesome concerts!
August 13, 2012
I’m offended. Not sure why yet, but I sure am!
August 13, 2012
Thanks Lars Ivar Igesund I didn’t think of Sibelius. However, this Wiki pages does not mention him, so I still would have made my offensive blunder.

Knut Torgersen I’ll apologize when you can figure out what offended. I’m sure you were offended. ;P
August 13, 2012
Chad Haney , I shall graciously accept your preemptive apology in the event that I discover something offensive in your posts: past, present or future. You are welcome.
That said, the Wiki link was fascinating. Imagine repurposing a rackets court for a nuclear reactor!
August 13, 2012
Rajini Rao To think that it was partly due to a labor strike is also fitting for Chicago.
August 13, 2012
Swedes. I’m offended by Swedes. Yeah. Definetely. And Americans believing we’re the capital of Sweden. Right.
August 13, 2012
Peter Lindelauf and Knut Torgersen please offend each other while I’m at work. I’ll be happy to offend both of you when I’m done with work.
August 13, 2012
I can honestly say for once 🙂 Chad Haney that I am not offended by anything you wrote & agree with Rajini Rao about repurposing a rackets court for a nuclear reactor! Y’all have a good rest of the day.
August 13, 2012
There is plenty of time to offend you in the future Cheryl Ann MacDonald
August 13, 2012
And I think you are going to teach me that fine art 🙂 Chad Haney we are both going no where….fast 🙂
August 14, 2012
Chad Haney…ouch! Anyone who has observed your posts would know you try to be a wise ass when Gnotic Pasta is absent but consistently you are probably one of the most sensitive, intellectually astute members of the GP science community. I appreciated reading your apology and acknowledging any perceived cultural slight. Now I understand the dog vs cats post. I still think you’re pretty cool :-).
August 14, 2012
Well thanks Mary Owens I’m sorry I didn’t offend you. I’m sure Peter Lindelauf would be happy to.
August 14, 2012
You’re Canadian. You need more than a cup of coffee. Oh, sorry did I offend you, Peter Lindelauf ?
August 14, 2012
Chad Haney…when you do offend me, don’t worry…I’ll let you know :-).
August 14, 2012
Peter Lindelauf is too much of a gentleman to offend :-).
August 14, 2012
When it comes to anti-science, I think Peter Lindelauf and I (and others) can drop the gentlemanliness quickly.
August 14, 2012
Yes, we’d like to know if we need to uncircle you.
August 14, 2012
Peter Lindelauf…I’m curious as well. What did you say?
August 14, 2012
By the way…why did you change your profile pic Feisal Kamil?
August 14, 2012
And I was posting about a nuclear plant in Finland.
August 14, 2012
Only when it’s offensive.
August 14, 2012
I have no idea. I only assume I was blocked. Not worried about it.
August 14, 2012
Peter Lindelauf…tolerance & freedom of expression cuts both ways. I am not offended. Religion, science, dogs vs cats…everyone is entitled to their opinion. I take issue when I am sensing I am being disrespected and attempted to be silenced . You guys still get my vote Feisal Kamil, Peter Lindelauf & Chad Haney!

Thanks Chad Haney. It has been a long time (Navy A-school) since I was in Chicago, this is something I would like to see some day.
December 2, 2015
Gary Ray R, I hope you do visit.
December 2, 2015
Chad Haney Many thanks for sharing this post. I would like to see it and other things, some day, even if Chicago is very far from Italy.
December 2, 2015
annarita ruberto, it’s been many, many moons since I’ve been to Italy. It’s a lovely country and I should visit again.
All of my G+ friends are welcome to visit Chicago and I’m happy to play tour guide.
December 3, 2015
I just re-read that comment stream. Memories.
December 3, 2015
You got that right, Gary Ray R. I think of our viking friend often.
December 3, 2015
Chad Haney You are very kind. I’ll consider it, if I’ll come to Chicago…some day. ☺
